THE GIRAFFE FAMILY

Despite their height, they are remarkably gentle. When visitors approach the feeding area, the whole family often steps closer out of curiosity with large eyes glimmering beneath long, graceful lashes.

Their long dark, prehensile tongues skillfully curl around branches, pulling leaves down with slow and deliberate movements. Elegant yet powerful, this feeding behavior reflects the extraordinary adaptations of the tallest land animal on Earth.

One Family, Many Personalities

In the giraffe family, each individual has a unique character.

  • Thái (the father) – Calm and observant, often standing tall to watch over the surroundings.
  • Lan (the mother) – Gentle and attentive, quietly pay attention to every movement within the group.
  • Thảo (Older sister) & Thái Anh (youngest brother) – Curious and energetic, always exploring every corner of the enclosure.

Giraffes are naturally social animals. Being together provides a sense of safety. When one becomes alert, the others follow. When one walks toward the feeding area, the rest move along in quiet harmony.

This rhythm creates a beautiful sight of long necks weaving against the blue sky, like a living painting in slow motion.

Dining Above the Ground

Each day, the giraffe family’s meals are thoughtfully prepared. Fresh leaves form the core of their diet, complemented by carefully selected fruits and vegetables. Reflecting their natural feeding habits, the system is designed with height in mind. Elevated feeding stations, including those for fruit, encourage them to stretch, reach, and use their tongues and lips with precision. This form of environmental enrichment supports both physical activity and mental stimulation, keeping them engaged and aligned with their instincts in the wild.

Moments That Make You Smile

In the late afternoon, sunlight often turns their patterned coats into shades of gold. Their long necks tilt in the same direction, forming soft curves against the sky.

Children often wonder, “Why are their necks so long?” Adults enjoy capturing the moment through their cameras. But what lingers is not just their height, it is the quiet grace in every movement.

A Message Behind the Height

In the wild, giraffes face mounting pressures—from shrinking habitats to illegal hunting. At Saigon Zoo & Botanical Gardens, caring for a healthy herd is not merely about display; it is part of a broader effort to inspire awareness and responsibility for wildlife conservation.

Today, the Thai–Lan giraffe family stands as more than an attraction. They are living ambassadors of a vital truth: every species plays an irreplaceable role in the ecosystem, and their existence deserves both respect and protection.

If you ever visit the Giraffe enclosure, try looking up just a little higher than usual.
You might meet a gentle gaze looking back down at you as a quiet greeting from the “gentle giants” of the garden.
