I. HISTORY, HERITAGE & LEGACY 1. When was the Zoo established? Following the French conquest of Cochinchina, several attempts were made to establish farms for Arabian horses and Burmese rice, but all failed. In March 1864, Louis Adolphe Germain, a French military veterinarian, was tasked with transforming 12 hectares of wasteland near the L’Avalanche Canal into a Botanical Garden. He designed the first pathways, nurseries, and animal enclosures.
